The Open Education for a Better World (OE4BW) is an online mentoring program that supports the development and implementation of Open Education and Open Educational Resources on topics with social impact in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

It is a project of the University of Nova Gorica and the UNESCO Chair in Open Technologies (JSI) both located in Slovenia. Dozens of mentors and developers from all corners of the planet are paired to conduct, in 3-4 months, projects around the OER, such as creating courses, books, and other open resources.

With the intention of bringing the project closer to local reality and context, as well as promoting the dissemination, contact, and integration of knowledge and of all people involved, the OE4BW program has hubs – centers – one per region of the globe.

The South American hub was created in 2020 through the initiative of the UNESCO Chair in Distance Education, in accordance with the demands of the MERCOSUR OER Recommendations and Action Plan, which points to the creation of a mentoring network as one of its main objectives.

The UNESCO Chair in Distance Education is represented by its coordinator, Tel Amiel, who has been part of the project since its inception in 2018. He acts as co-coordinator of the South American hub in partnership with Werner Westermann (Library of the National Congress).
