Creating the guide
De educacaoaberta.org
Here, we briefly delineate the creation of the Guide. We think it important to explain the reasons and procedures, since the OER movement often discussed the concept of "remix" but there is far less remix than we would expect. There is still great emphasis on creating and using ready-made materials. We still have substantial difficulty to adapt and collaborate from what exists, even though this is the more impressive part of the OER movement. Even though remix is common in music and arts, it is still far from being common practice in education (especially basic education), since it depends on a different relation to educational materials and an alternative perspective on authorship. Even portals dedicated to remix[1], which demonstrate great success in offering resources, but remix is still a challenge.
In creating this Guide, we had in mind filling a gap - the lack of material on OER available in portuguese to a general public, and especially to teachers. We could begin from nothing - creating a new resource. Instead we chose remix. This meant identifying what already existed. We elected five organizations/sites with participation in the OER movement, and had guides for OER focused on educational environments:
Based on the table of contents of these resources, we begin the process:
- Which points do they have in common?
- Which elements are not contemplated, but are important to our audience/public?
Once general elements were identified, we focused on content. The first two were eliminated, since they contained only the list of contents, but no elements within. Based on JISC, Curriki, and WikiEducator, we continued:
- Within the common elements, which sites have better (more appropriate) content?
- Which elements can we incorporate 1) completely 2) translating 3) adapting 4) revising substantially or 5) only as a source of inspiration?
- Which other gaps must be filled by 1) other sites 2) new content?
We isolated the sections from the documents and begin our remix process.
A final, more complete version of this procedure will be available soon.
